Conducting a (systematic) literature review
A review article provides a summary of the state of affairs in a particular field. Review articles are written by experts based on extensive literature research. Reading a review quickly provides insight into a field or subject. That is why the Walaeus Library has made a Manual on Searching (Medical) Literature, specifically PubMed (and other biomedical or biopharmaceutical databases).
LUMC-staff members or LUMC students can make an appointment online with an information specialist of the Walaeus medical library for advice on doing a systematic review, a CAT rapport, or general (medical) research questions. Book your appointment over here!
Study places
The Walaeus library has around 125 study places available, some with computer. Seats during exam periods can be booked online, by LUMC students only.
Books and journal collections at the library
At the Walaeus Library, paper books and journals are shelved according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification.
Loanable items can be fetched from the shelf and borrowed at the desk using your LU-Card. These items may also be requested using the Leiden University Libraries (UBL) catalogue, to be picked up at a later time at the selected UBL pickup location.
Online information sources and manuals
The app BrowZine makes it easy finding academic and scientific e-journals. It can also save and place those on your own 'bookshelf'.
Links to databases as PubMed, UpToDate and Web of Science can be found via Database Search. It is convenient to store this link in your Favorites Bar.
On the right side of this page, you will find our Subject Guides. You can consult these on topics like Systematic Reviews and PubMed.
Interlibrary Loan and Purchase suggestioins
If an item is not available at Walaeus, which is a part of the Leiden University Libraries (UBL), you can request a book loan or article delivery through interlibrary loan, or suggest items for purchase. LUMC staff can submit ILL book or article requests for interlibrary loan using the Walaeus Library ILL request form. Please contact the Walaeus Library if you should have any questions regarding the Walaeus Library ILL services and procedures.
Leiden University and LUMC staff, students and professors emeriti may fill out a purchase requests form, to suggest Leiden University Libraries (UBL) to buy books, journals, databases, videos, and other materials currently not held by the library.
Please let us know whether the material is mandatory course literature, and whether you prefer print or digital.
All requests will be reviewed by a medical information specialist or subject librarian.
Referencing and Open Access
It is not an easy task to collect the sources you used manually. Instead, you can use reference managers (like EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero) to organise your sources from the start. This way you can easily cite them later. You can use a reference manager to save literature, cite and to save notes. You can export the bibliographic data from Google Scholar, the catalogue and other databases. Leiden University / LUMC has got a licence on EndNote. For more information about using the correct reference managers or reference styles, visit our page Citing or sign up for one of our Reference Manager Courses.
Open Access and publishing
Please contact our Digital Scholarship Librarian LUMC, Tessa de Roo, for more information about Open Access and publishing.
