Study places

The Walaeus library has around 125 study places available, some with computer. Seats can be booked online, by LUMC students only.

Conducting a (systematic) review

A (systematic) review is written by experts, based on extensive literature research in a particular field. Reading a review will quickly provide insight into a field or subject. The Walaeus Library has created a helpful Manual on searching (medical) literature.

LUMC staff members and students can book an appointment online with a Walaeus Library medical information specialist, for advice regarding systematic reviews, CAT rapports, or any other general (medical) research questions.

At the Walaeus Library, the physical library collection is shelved according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification.

Loanable items can be fetched from the shelf and borrowed at the desk using your LU-Card. These items may also be requested using the Leiden University Libraries catalogue, to be picked up at a later time at the selected pickup location.

LUMC staff who wish to have remote access to Leiden University Libraries' online sources, but do not have a Leiden University account yet, can apply for a dedicated ULCN (library) account for LUMC staff.

Leiden University and LUMC students have remote access using their Leiden University student account.

Finding and using online materials

If an item is not available at Leiden University Libraries, LUMC staff can request books on loan or article scans using the LUMC staff ILL request form.

Reference managers such as EndNote, Mendeley or Zotero can save a lot of time and effort, by helping you organise your sources. Use reference managers to save literature, to cite, and to save notes. Bibliographic data can be exported from Google Scholar, the Leiden University Libraries catalogue and other databases.

For more information about using reference managers or reference styles, please visit our webpage on Citing, or sign up for one of our Reference Manager Courses.

Please contact our LUMC Digital Scholarship Librarian, Tessa de Roo, for more information about Open Access and publishing.

Would you like to suggest Leiden University Libraries to buy a book, journal, database or other material currently not held by the library? Please fill out a purchase requests form.
