The Academic Historical Museum is located in the Academy Building. Guests and visitors of inaugural lectures and PhD defences will have the opportunity to visit the inside of the building during such ceremonies. Other visits to the museum are by appointment only.

Academy Building

The permanent display of the Academic Historical Museum runs throughout the Academy Building, with showcases, sculptures and portraits of Leiden professors evoking the rich history of the University and its student life.

The Academic Historical Museum manages an extensive collection which is inseparably linked with the Academy Building and the history of Leiden University. The collection is highly diverse and includes photographs, maps, degree certificates, books, periodicals, archives, banners, gowns, showpieces, paintings, prints, sculptures and medals.

A large part of the collection’s material can be consulted on site by appointment. In the near future several parts of the collection will be transferred to the collections in the University Library, where they will be made accessible via the Catalogue. This material can be consulted in the Special Collections reading room upon request.

Please consult the collection guide for a listing of those parts of the collection already in the University Library.
