Our library locations

All our library locations in Leiden and The Hague offer a comfortable study and collaboration environment. You can also borrow and return books at all locations. Found an article online? You can print, copy, and scan at every library location. To use these services, you always need your activated LU-Card. Not affiliated with Leiden University? You can have a LU-Card made at most libraries, along with a corresponding guest account.

Libray locations

University Library (UB)

University Library

The largest library in Leiden is the University Library at Witte Singel 27. If you're studying a Humanities subject, this is the library for you. The UB has the most study places of all our locations. From regular silent study places to study cells, collaborative study rooms and laptop screens, you're almost certain to find your perfect study place at the University Library. To enter the UB, you need an activated LU-Card. Some study places require a reservation. Books in the study rooms of this library can only be consulted, not borrowed.

Asian Library

If you are studying subjects that require information on Asia, then the Asian Library is your ideal study spot. The Asian Library can be found on the second floor of the UB. Most study places have to be booked in advance. Asian Studies students can book their spot three days in advance, while other students can book theirs two days prior. Outside of exam weeks, Asian Library study places marked with a white or a light blue sticker can be used by all visitors. Books in this library can only be consulted, not borrowed.

Libraries in the Herta Mohr Building

Middle Eastern Library

The Middle Eastern Library is one of our newest locations. It is completely focused on the study of source materials from and about the (ancient) Middle East. Books in the reading room of this library can only be consulted, not borrowed. 

African Library

The African Library is the library of the African Studies Centre. This library focuses entirely on the history, languages, and cultures of the African continent. A footbridge from the University Library (UB) provides direct access to the African Library.

Social and Behavioural Sciences Library 

Social and Behavioural Sciences Library 

The Social and Behavioural Sciences Library can be found in the Pieter de la Court building at the Wassenaarseweg 52 in Leiden. In this library, you can take books off the shelves and borrow them at the desk as well. To borrow books you need an activated LU-Card. For some study places you need a reservation.

Law Library

Law Library

The Law Library is located in the Kamerlingh Onnes building (KOG) on the Steenschuur 25. You'll find the library right across from the main entrance. The Law Library has a spacious reading room where you can take books off the shelves and borrow them at the desk. Many of the study spaces at this location are equipped with a desktop computer.

Like the UB, the Law Library is often open until late in the evening and you can study there on the weekends. To enter the Law library, you need an activated LU-Card. For some study places you need a reservation

Science Library

Science Library

The Science Library is located at the Bio Science Park in the Gorlaeus building. One of our newest library locations with brand-new furniture. You can study at a standing desk, for example. Some study places require a reservation.

Walaeus Library

Walaeus Library

The Walaeus Library is located at the LUMC and is focussed on the medical sciences. You'll have every kind of specialist literature you need is at your fingertips. You need an activated LU-Card to borrow books. If you have any questions about using the library or specific literature, don't hesitate to ask our staff and the medical information specialists at the library desk!

Wijnhaven Library

Wijnhaven Library

You can find the Wijnhaven Library at Turfmarkt 90 in The Hague, within a stone’s throw of The Hague Central Station. If you have classes in The Hague, Wijnhaven Library is your library of choice. To borrow books, you need an activated LU-Card. Some study places in the Wijnhaven Library require booking.

Lockers Van Steenis Building

Lockers Van Steenis Building

There is no library in the Van Steenis Building, but you can have books delivered there via our book lockers. You can also return your loans here. To use the book lockers, you’ll need a valid and activated LU-Card.
