Study areas

The library locations offer close to 2000 study places, with and without computer.

Outside of exam periods, regular study places without a computer can be used freely by all visitors owning a valid library account and library card (LU-Card). To have a library card made, no academic affiliation is required.

The study places mentioned below that need to be booked in advance can only be reserved and used by Leiden University students.

At the various library locations some access restrictions apply.

Computer workplaces

Computer workplaces are available for use by Leiden University students only. They need to be booked in advance.

All library locations will offer several computers for use by other visitors. These places are marked with a white sticker. They cannot be reserved.

Single occupancy study rooms in the UB

The University Library on Witte Singel offers sixteen individual study rooms, for use by Leiden University students. The rooms need to be booked in advance.

Study places during exam periods

During exam periods, study places will be available to Leiden University students only. Seats need to be booked in advance.

All library locations will have some study places available for visitors to whom the UBL library access restrictions do not apply. These study places are marked with a white sticker. They cannot be reserved.

  • 11 - 31 October 2021
  • 6 - 24 December 2021
  • 14 March - 3 April 2022
  • 16 May - 5 June 2022

Bookings

Computer workplaces and single use study rooms can be used by Leiden University students only, after online reservation. Regular study places without a computer can only be reserved during exam periods.

  • Go to Leiden University's online study place booking system and log on using your student account
  • Choose a location, date, time and duration (max. 4 hours, no fixed time slots)
  • Select an available seat
  • Confirm your booking

Study place seat numbers can be found on each desk.

Using your booked study place

You can use your reserved study space only after having checked in. At the University Library and Law Library, you will automatically be checked in upon scanning your LU-Card at the entrance turnstiles. At all other locations, please scan the QR-code on the check-in posts near the ‘SharedDesk for Students Check-in’ banners.

Make sure to check in on time: your reservation will be cancelled if you have not checked in within 30 minutes after your booking's start time. The seat will then be available for use by another student.

Studying quietly, or having a conversation?

Several areas within the libraries, specifically the reading rooms, are marked as quiet zones. Outside of these zones you may confer in a subdued voice.

Wifi

Leiden University offers two wireless networks: Eduroam (preferred, for university students and staff) and Leiden University Wireless Access. More info and user manuals can be found on the the university’s ICT Shared Service Centre's webpage.
