Services for Leiden University alumni

Leiden University alumni and PhD graduates can continue to use library facilities free of charge.

Current library services

Due to nationwide coronavirus regulations, Leiden University Libraries (UBL) offers adjusted services up to and including 26 September 2021. Please find an overview on our webpage on library services during the coronavirus situation, and check our regular pages for news on upcoming changes starting 27 September.

UBL library services during the coronavirus situation

A library card at Leiden University Libraries allows Leiden University alumni and PhD graduates to keep using various library facilities free of charge.

After graduation, your student's account will automatically be changed into an alumnus account. You can continue to use the same log-on data, LU-Card, and uMail address. You can continue to renew your loans as before, using the catalogue.

If you do not have a LU-Card yet you can request one either online using Account Self Service, or in person at one of the libraries.

Alumni graduated before september 2006 may have a library account and LU-Card made, free of charge, at one of the library desks. Please bring a valid means of ID plus evidence of your graduation at Leiden University.

PhD graduates may apply for a library guest account; please find more information on the Leiden University alumni page.

Using your alumnus account, all UBL databases can be accessed from within the University network (except for 'Legal Intelligence', offering access for students and staff only). Due to coronavirus measures, alumni currently do not have access to library seats and study places.

Remote access

Leiden Alumni Databases offers remote access to the following databases:

  • Academic Search Alumni Edition
  • Art Index (H.W. Wilson)
  • Criminal Justice Abstracts
  • Library Literature & Information Science Index (H.W. Wilson)
  • JSTOR collections: Arts & Sciences 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7, and Early Journal Content

In case you have forgotten your password, you can request a new password online.

All email notices to Leiden University alumni graduated after August 2006 regarding loans, requests, and overdue fines, are sent to the uMail-address associated with your account.

Due to several Leiden University uMail updates, users may currently experience issues regarding uMail forwarding settings and/or mailbox access.

We would like to invite you, as an alumnus or PhD, to join the Friends of Leiden University Libraries foundation. Friends contribute to the preservation, expansion, restauration and maintenance of the collections. 

As a friend of Leiden University Libraries you will be invited to lectures, themed activities and exhibition openings, and you will be kept updated on various developments within the libraries.
