Video podcast: early photographs and driven pioneers
From domestic scenes and portraits to streetscapes and landscapes—the earliest known photographs of Japan are still raw and unpolished. Together with Maartje van den Heuvel, curator of photography, we explore the origins of photography in old Japan.

In the series ‘In Search of Japan,’ hosts Paul Maas and Nadia Kreeft-Mishkovskyi engage in conversations with curators and researchers about their fascination with Japan, their academic work, and their favorite items from the Japanese collections in Leiden. Using maps, photographs, travelogues, and prints, they explore the unique stories surrounding Japan and its history.
In each episode, young Japanologist Sam Kuivenhoven shares an anecdote about Philipp Franz von Siebold—a colorful German physician who, in the nineteenth century, worked at the Dutch trading post on the small island of Dejima.
