Our 3 October University and Science Market have become a tradition at Leiden’s 3 October celebrations, and this year is no exception. But that’s not all: we’re also taking part in the Weekend of Science in The Hague on 4 October. Two cities, one mission: making science accessible to all. Will you join us?
3 October - Science Market in Leiden
Together with the Augustinus student association, Leiden University is hosting a science market filled with facts, games and puzzles for young and old. Below is a sneak peek at what’s in store. Come to Steenschuur, outside the Kamerlingh Onnes building, between 11:00 and 13:00 to discover this and much more.
Programme highlights
- The stem cell factory Step into the shoes of a drug developer: reprogramme stem cells and create your own medicine.
- Operation game Test your surgical precision in a life-sized version of the game or try catching ducks with surgical pliers! How good a surgeon are you?
- Urban safari What greenery can you find in town? Go on an adventure and learn why urban greenery matters – and who benefits from it.
- Shard seekers Travel through time and discover which shard is the oldest, from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages.
- Cap on, cap off! Test your knowledge of plastic and discover how law students are tackling pollution.
- Money stress portal Why do some people experience money stress and fall into debt? How can behavioural psychology help support them? Visit our booth and find out more.
4 October – Weekend of Science in The Hague
Science will come alive at Leiden University in the heart of The Hague during the Weekend of Science. Discover how thrilling and surprising science can be. Do experiments, play games, watch mini lectures and find out how science helps solve real-world problems. There’s something for everyone aged 8 and up.
And we’re not doing this alone: we’re teaming up with Delft University of Technology, Open University and Health Campus The Hague to bring you even more knowledge and fun. Visit us at our Wijnhaven building (Turfmarkt 99) on 4 October from 13:00 to 17:00 and experience science up close!

- Creepy corner – Are you easily spooked? Dare to enter our haunted house with its chilling sights and sounds.
- Mock trial Step into the courtroom as judge, lawyer or suspect in our mini trial.
- Hidden treasures beneath Binnenhof Hear from the city archaeologist about the fascinating finds made during the Binnenhof renovation.
- Crime and punishment at Gevangenpoort Discover the history of crime in The Hague and this prison, where you could be prosecuted for fortune-telling or begging.
- Twister with organs Test your knowledge of the human body and its organs in this twist on the classic game Twister.
- Healthy lifestyle Escape Box Answer questions about hygiene, nutrition and exercise to escape and complete your mission!

During the Weekend of Science, Leiden University’s Campus The Hague is joining forces with the Open University, Delft University of Technology and Health Campus The Hague. This is a first glimpse of a special collaboration: in January, we’ll be opening a new building in the centre of The Hague together with the Open University, Delft University of Technology, the LUMC and the Universities of the Netherlands. The Weekend of Science is your chance to preview this unique research and knowledge hub.
