Leiden Professors

The website Leidse Hoogleraren (Leiden professors) contains information on and portraits of professors at Leiden University from 1575 until present day.

Professors determine to a large extent the reputation of a university. Immediately after its foundation in 1575 Leiden University strove to bind authoritative scientists. More than 2,200 professors have since been working in Leiden. A significant part of these, approximately one-quarter, is currently active at the University. The Project Leiden Professors was an initiative of the Historical Commission of Leiden University. She assigned Leiden University Libraries (UBL) to build a website that contains the details of all professors, from the establishment of the university up to the present day, including their portraits.

The project consisted of several parts:

  • Collecting the particulars of professors and lecturers, using the three editions of the album Scholasticum (1941, 1975 and 1991) and subsequent publications on Leiden professors. The (digital) archives of the university where used for more recent data;
  • Retrieving and digitizing of portraits using the collections of the Academic Historical Museum, the UBL, the Executive Office and the faculties;
  • The realization of a link between the professors and their publications in the library catalogue and LUCRIS;
  • Realizing an appealing presentation for the portraits, for example by incorporating the portraits in a calendar linking to events in the life of the professors.
