When making available the heritage collections for study and research extra measures are taken to minimize risks and optimize conditions for use.
Items from the special collections are being used for several purposes. Researchers can study them in the reading room, the UBL digitizes the special collections and items travel around the world when participating in exhibitions. Preservation and conservation aim to preserve the original materials and to allow them to be used. As the collections are used intensively the objects need a great deal of care.
At the UBL a conservation wokshop is set up. Most conservation treatments are carried out in the library itself. Apart from the preservation and conservation treatments at the conservation workshop items for exhibitions and loans are being prepared and the conservator advises on such subjects as transport and handling, and reproduction of the materials.
