Donation Oral History Archive by Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center

The Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center (CIHC) has donated the Oral History Archive to Leiden University Libraries (UBL). CIHC chair Dr Patricia Tjiook-Liem and University Librarian Kurt De Belder recently signed the agreement for the donation of the archive.

The Oral History Archive of the CIHC contains digital audio files of interviews with overseas Chinese Indonesians and digital summaries belonging to the interviews. Altogether there are interviews with 39 persons and more than 110 hours of material. The interviews are in Dutch and occasionally in Indonesian and in Hokkien.

The collection was formed by the CIHC in association with The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV). The interviews were held between 2013 and 2017. In 2018 the KITLV transferred the collection of interviews to the CIHC.

The CIHC was established in 2011 as part of The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) academic research institute. The goal of the CIHC is to preserve the heritage of the Chinese from Indonesia in the Netherlands as well as to promote and document the knowledge of their history and migration history. The Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center continued as an independent body in 2016.

The Oral History Archive of the CIHC still needs to be made accessible but will become available in time through the UBL’s Digital Collections website. Due to privacy rules, access to the archive (by appointment) is restricted to researchers.
