Managing Diversity in Organizations

A challenge and an opportunity
As a consequence of social and economic developments, organizations have become increasingly diverse in the last decades. Increased diversity has the potential to be both beneficial (e.g., increased creativity, flexibility, performance) and detrimental (e.g., increased conflict, distrust, bias) for organizations. Given this bifurcation, it remains important for organizations to effectively manage diversity in order to limit its disadvantages and harvest its advantages.
This presentation focuses on some of the most prominent diversity management strategies in organizations, examining their advantages and (unintentional) side effects for an ethnically diverse workforce. In addition, emerging research on ways to retain the positive effects of specific ideologies while suppressing their negative effects will be highlighted. Finally, the differential impact of specific diversity approaches on ethnic-cultural minorities versus other groups (e.g., women) will be illuminated.
